2012 Women’s Artistic Gymnastics European championships - GB team announcement .
British Gymnastics is delighted to announce the senior and junior women’s artistic gymnasts selected to represent Great Britain at the 2012 European Championships 9-13th May in Brussels (BEL).
For the senior gymnasts the European Championships form part of their preparation for the London 2012 Games with all gymnasts selected looking to push their claim for the full Olympic team to be announced on July 4th.
The line-up is led by British champion Hannah Whelan and 3-time Commonwealth Games champion Imogen Cairns, both of whom competed at the last Olympic Games in Beijing.
They are joined by Jennifer Pinches and Danusia Francis who competed at the 2011 European and World Championships, whilst 15-year old Rebecca Tunney makes her senior major championships debut to complete the line-up. The seniors will compete in team and individual apparatus competitions.
In the junior event, junior British Championship all-around silver medallist Gabby Jupp is joined by Charlie Fellows, Angel Romaeo, Raer Theaker and Georgina Hockenhull. The juniors will compete for all-around and individual apparatus titles.
British Gymnastics Olympic Performance Director Tim Jones: “We are pleased to be able to announce such strong senior and junior teams for the Europeans, even accounting for the absence of Beth Tweddle. For the seniors, this event has always been earmarked as a stepping stone to the 2012 Olympic Games, and the extra experience the girls will gain can only strengthen our team for London. For the juniors this is an opportunity to see some of our best young talent compete against outstanding opposition, and we hope to see the emergence of some potential new stars for the British Team develop ahead of the Rio cycle.”

Beth Tweddle - British Gymnastics confirm that gymnast Beth Tweddle was not available for selection for the 2012 European Championships.
Beth’s withdrawal from the selection process came as a precautionary measure arising out of a recent knee issue, which required minor keyhole surgery last Friday. The decision is designed to help protect Beth’s Olympics aspirations. Beth is currently being cared for by the British Gymnastics medical team. We remain confident that she will be in first class shape and ready for the challenges of the London Games.
Tim Jones, British Gymnastics Olympic Performance Director said: “It is important for us to protect Beth and safeguard her Olympic dreams. It is in Beth’s best interests that we have decided not to consider her for the 2012 European Championships, allowing her to spend the time working with the British Gymnastics Medical Team and her coach to ensure a speedy return to full fitness.”
Beth Tweddle: “ I’m disappointed not to be in a position to attend the European’s but also thankful that this gives me the opportunity to get myself fully fit and ready for the rest of the season, certainly it’s much better for this process to happen now rather than later in the year! I am very much still in the gym every day and will continue to work alongside the British Gymnastics medical team to ensure I manage my recovery. The line-up for the European Championship demonstrates the strength in depth that we have, and I’m sure the girls will do a great job in Brussels.”
British Gymnastics media manager Tim Peake will attend the event providing updates via the @bgmediateam twitter feed and the British Gymnastics Facebook page with press releases sent daily to all media and posted on the BG website.
